A gas tanker truck crashed on a highway south of Mexico City, causing a massive explosion that engulfed the area.
The accident happened on September 10 on one of the main routes from Mexico City to Puebla. Security camera footage showed gas escaping from the tanker, creating a cloud that covered the entire road, then catching fire and causing a massive explosion.
The explosion burned 18 cars, killing at least three people and injuring 70, 19 of whom are in critical condition. Witnesses said many people suffered severe burns all over their bodies, with some victims lying on the road waiting for ambulances.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada said the incident was an “emergency” that caused serious injuries. She was at the scene with firefighters and paramedics.
Mexico City officials are investigating the cause of the fire and explosion. City official Cesar Cravioto said the fire was under control by late Friday evening and the highway was reopened after hours of closure.
The tanker bore the logo of the Silza Energy Company. However, an unnamed company official denied that the vehicle belonged to them, saying the company did not operate in the area.
