Kody Brown reflects on how is story is “taking a turn” following the end of his marriages to Meri, Janelle and Christine Brown

Kody Brown is comparing the end of his plural marriage to the divorce of Cher and Sonny Bono.

In PEOPLE’s exclusive sneak peek at the Oct. 27 episode of Sister Wives, Kody recalls learning when the “I Got You Babe” singers finalized their divorce in 1975 after 11 years of marriage.

“When Sonny and Cher got divorced, I was six, I was five, and it broke my heart,” he shares. “It freaked me out. I was like divorce is the biggest evil of, you know, it’s just something that saddened me.”

In a confessional, Kody further reflects on his view of divorce following the demise of his marriages to Meri, Christine and Janelle Brown. He remains married to Robyn Brown.

“At six and seven years old, I had no awareness that the idea, the concept of divorce was real,” he explains. “Sonny and Cher getting a divorce devastating. Like, does that really happen?”

“This isn’t supposed to be part of the story that I’m writing about myself,” he adds. “You know what I mean? And everybody’s their story. You’re the author of your story. My story is taking a turn.”

Kody notes how the group has “ridden the wave” as they adjust to a new normal as a family.

“We’ve crashed the ship. We survived. We’re on the shore, but we crashed the ship. That’s the realization. We crashed the ship and that does make me terribly sad,” he says as he begins to tear up.

In September, the Brown family patriarch reflected on his regrets following the  dissipation of his marriages.

“There’s even the regret of the divorce — Meri, Janelle and Christine — those divorces and being angry during those divorces,” he said at the time. “Sure, I regret that stuff.”

He also said he hopes the family can move forward amicably into a new chapter of their lives.

“There will always be the moment you said, ‘I wish I would’ve taken advantage,’ and there’s the regret,” he said, later adding, “But see, that’s all over now and everybody’s healing. And so now we can move forward, and we can just take those steps that create less regret.”
