The New York Giants continue to wait for Aaron Rodgers to make his decision in free agency, but they aren’t sitting idly by.
While 10-time Pro Bowler Russell Wilson is scheduled to visit New York on Friday after a meeting with the Cleveland Browns, the Giants had another free-agent visit with former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Joe Flacco on Thursday, per ESPN’s Field Yates.
The Giants need to do their homework on all of the available quarterbacks considering the chance that Rodgers draws this whole process out only to reject New York as his next destination. That means hosting retread quarterbacks like Wilson and Flacco.
Since his 11-year stint with the Baltimore Ravens, which included a victory in Super Bowl XLVII, ended in 2018, Flacco has bounced around the league quite a bit as a backup quarterback and spot starter. After earning the Comeback Player of the Year award with the Browns in 2023, Flacco signed a one-year deal with the Colts.
Expected to serve as the backup to Anthony Richardson, Flacco wound up being thrust into a starting role for a few weeks in the middle of the season due to the former’s injury troubles. Then, Richardson was benched for two games, which gave Flacco the reins until he gave it back up.
Overall, Flacco had some good moments. He also had some head-scratching turnovers, but it was clear he still has an affinity for pushing the ball downfield. In eight games (six starts) with the Colts last season, Flacco completed 65.3% of his passes for 1,761 yards, 12 touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 90.5 passer rating.
Flacco is certainly an option if the Giants whiff on both Rodgers and Wilson, but it would likely force the front office to make some type of move to bring in a rookie quarterback.
